Doors, Drawers, and Decisions

When renovating your home or even building a new one, you might feel like you have a never-ending list of decisions and choices to make. Thankfully, My Cabinet Factory (MCF) is here to help!

You may already know what colors you want or storage you need, but did you know one of the most important decisions is your cabinet door and drawer style? You will need to decide if you want inset, full overlay, or partial overlay cabinets.

If this decision is news to you, you are not alone. A lot of homeowners aren’t aware of this key design element. As the most outward-facing part of the cabinet, the doors/drawer style helps define the overall look and style of your soon-to-be transformed space.

So, let’s explore the options together. That way, you can understand the differences and choose the best one for your home.

inset cabinets

Inset

Inset cabinet doors sit flush inside a visible frame. They provide a smooth overall appearance because the doors, drawers, and frame all sit flush when closed. They require hardware (or a push system) because you can’t simply open them with your fingers. The clean lines and look of this style make it a great option for modern kitchens, but it also offers a timeless feel that suits a variety of style preferences.

Full Overlay

Full overlay cabinet doors completely cover the cabinet face, providing a flat cabinet front. They do not have an exposed frame, and their door faces sit directly next to one another. Like inset doors, full overlay doors require hardware (drawer pulls and cabinet handles) to be opened. Also like the inset style, these doors have a clean and continuous appearance that creates a consistent look across your entire room and fit a myriad of design aesthetics.

Partial Overlay

Partial overlay cabinet doors sit on top of the cabinet face, typically showing an exposed frame on either side and between the doors. The doors cover only the openings, not the full face of the box. Partial overlay drawers do not require hardware. This style offers a more traditional look but also a timeless feel which suits a lot of homeowners.

In addition to these main three styles, My Cabinet Factory’s also offers Frameless cabinets. Our expert craftsman can customize your cabinets in endless ways, so don’t be afraid to ask.

We hope these details and photos help you feel more confident as you start dreaming of transforming every room in your home.

Like any design decision, there is no right or wrong answer. You simply want to select the one that feels right for you and makes your home reflect your style.
